XXII Hulk mortality
Turning aside the eye of fruitless compassion for these
survivors. To whom do all those so many departed wretches owe their deaths?
To whom, in the first rank at least but to the Duke of Portland and Lord Pelham?
to the Duke who chalked out the plan, and to the Lord
who follows it.
Deaths, Sir? Do you say—what is it—what do I hear? what is
it you are accusing us of: me and my noble friend?
Do you charge us with murder? Is it murder thus that
you charge us with?
Oh no my Lord! no such thing! Homicide in
—destruction of a single life, homicide in private life may be murder homicide
by low people may—homicide contemplated for
days or through it but a few hours—homicide in private
life—homicide by low people+—may be murder: homicide
by wholesale—destruction of lives by hundreds—
destruction contemplated for months or years—homicide
in high life—homicide in such high office—homicide
to oblige a friend or so—homicide to accommodate
Gospel-propagating Lords—such homicide, if it were homicide without punishment—without
delinquency—without danger—without blame!
Oh, no, my Lord! so far from murder, I charge not so much as homicide—
not even so much as excusable homicide—certainly not not so much as justifiable
homicide—upon the author of all these Deaths.
