Great severity at the outset upon the brow of the new
Hercules: fierceappalling glances Put down upon the culprit
Stable keeper: fire and flame in the superior region, tremblings
and qualings in the lower, But times change; and dispositions
with them: and though dispositions should not individualspersons
themselves change in time. I put the fairest case
forward: I speak of the best that can happen. I suppose
- I hope no offence by the supposition - it is but a
supposition - that noble Lords are in earnestmean what they appearwould be thought to mean - and that
the object is - andnot merely to make the place - much less to rivet the abuse but to remove it.
But times change, and dispositions with them: and though
dispositions should not, individuals themselves go off in time.
Time in these cases such situations especially is a great a great emotional diminisher
of distances: a great begetter of and mutal understandings - a great promoter of explanations. A B
very few months not to say weeks - not to say day.
will be sufficient to bringput things into some channel:
and the odds are many - many indeed to air in favour
of the old one. Between superintendent and subordinate
there must be an understanding. an understanding of some
sort or other - or busines can not go on. It is altogether
necessary: and what is more it is mutually
convenient. Every thing is then quiet and composed: every
every thing is once more as it should be: Between superintendent
and subordinate - between Inspector and inspected
there nothing new remains but mutualperfect/undisturbed harmony complainings,
mutual confidence. But when confidence has reigns
established itself what need of inspection? The very idea is invidious:
the operation useless. What remains then, but for each to
sent himself for good and all set down under his own snug fig-tree: studying to be
quiet and minding his own business? The one escapes has no longer any
