XVII Improved Prisons 116b 610 In all receptacles without exception (the demonstration
is a strict one, and comes within the
province of mathematics — yes, my Lord, even
"of arithmetic and its calculations") the greater
the space contained, the less the proportion
of matter required for the containing of that
space. By the same powerful cause, the effect
is influenced in a variety of other ways:
amongst others, by diminution of the number
and expence of inspecting eyes. If this be true
of all such concerns in general, it will be more
particularly true in proportion as reluctance,
or unpractised awkwardness, prevail among
the working hands. —
