350 Crit. Jur. Crim. Account of the working Convicts

How secured
The chains round the ancle at one time lined with
list, but this left off because it prevented the officers
from seeing when the irons were sawed.

Between 40 & 50 to guard them

Punishments
Punishments Whipping & running the gauntlet —
rarely inflicted — not once a month — Qu. if above once
in six months.

Cloathing
All well cloathed — the uniform a dark brown
Jacket & trowsers — those who work in the ditch have
been furnished with boots by the board of ordnance.

Accommodations
The Censor a fine large ship (formerly the Crescent of
76 guns of & purchased by Mr Campbell from the Commissioner
of the Navy) — The main Deck covered and made flush With the quarter deck & forecastle. 2 small cannon
at the mainmast pointed forward.

The convicts at present go all over the ship but a
space is to be enclosed with bulk heads towards the
stern for the officers and crew.

The gun Deck to be fitted up with beds as well
as the deck below Which is at present used for that
purpose — Every other port to shut up in winter — the rest to have strong iron grates. One was we saw already fixed.

The beds raised about 2 feet from the floor & 2 or 3
feet asunder in one row along the ship's side — they are of straw covered with canvas &
furnished with blankets & pretty clean rugs — from the smallness of
the beds it is probable that every man has one to himself
but Qu. This was the case in the Hospital.

No fire or candle allowed at night, but the place is
abundantly warm — we were there in a very cold day, Jany 18th
