9 Bicetre Proposal Objections
Pecuniary profit possible and therefore
personal private interest the motive — This is the
mos characteristic peculiar excellence of the system: — that
while he is pursuing his own interest, as every
man must be supposed and expected to do, he
is whether he will or no pursuing the interest of the
establishment. I have said, and I hope I have
proved, that a person who in such an instance <add>a station </add> has not the tie of
personal interest to bind him to his duty will
will never perform
it to the best advantage
not long conti not long be fit for it. The true question is, is does
any thing personal interest in this case leave any thing to apprehend
from it? on the contrary, directed as it is,
does not every thing depend upon it? its influence? is not every
thing to be hoped for from the presence its action, every thing
to be feared from the want of it? In general
a danger attends the employing a man whose
motives are for undertaking the employment are
of the interested kind (though what other sort
of man can you make sure of?) the a danger
I say — why? because interest may seduce
him to violate from the g line of his duty: — but if matters are
so ordered that he can not promote pursue his that interest but in
proportion
