Correspondence
of Jeremy Bentham of Queens Square Place Esqr. with
Charles Long Esqr. Secretary to the Treasury, and Joseph
White Esqr. Sollicitor to the Treasury, respecting the giving of
notice to the Dean and Chapter of Westminster,
of the Bill intended to be brought into Parliament, under the
direction of the Lords of the Treasury, for dividing Tothill
Fields, and appropriating part thereof to the purposes of
the intended Penitentiary Establishment.
[A]
Mr. Bentham to Mr. Long.
Queen Square Place Westminster 30th. July 1798
Sir
Understanding that it has been determined that the
Tothill Fields Division and Inclosure Bill for the purpose
of the proposed Penitentiary House shall be brought in next
Session, and that the Notices requisite for that purpose shall
accordingly be given, and observing from the standing orders of
the House of Commons that the Months of August and September
and therein specified as the Months in the course of which
such notices must have been given or the Bill cannot be brought
in. I take the Liberty of bringing the matter to your remembrance
apprehensive that if, for want of timely information on the
part of the Individual concerned, the business should fail of
being done in time, the failure might be laid not without reason
to his charge. The object of this address is therefore humbly
to beg, if there be no objection, that it may please the Lords
Commissioners of the Treasury to give directions to their Sollicitor
to prepare and give the notices requisite for that purpose: and
being so materially concerned in interest to be apprised of
whatever step may come to be taken in relation to that business I
