1712 Sand Sold from the said Tothill Fields at qd per Load—By order of Vestry.

1764 "To all Builders and others &c" advertizement.

In 1764 An Advertisement appeared in the Public Papers under the Sanction of the
Dean and Chapter of Westminster inviting Builders and other Persons to take the ground
in Tothill Fields upon building Leases. This was answered by a counter advertisement
from the Vestries of the United Parishes of St Margaret and St John the Evangelist
Westminster warning all Builders and others from taking the same. In consequence of the
latter advertisement the Plan of the Dean and Chapter was relinquished.

On the Part of the Dean and Chapter it was contended by Mr.. M a Vestryman
that the Abotts and Sodality of St Peter Westminster have exercised more than
Manerial Rights over the Ground in Question from very remote antiquity. In the
time of Edward the Confessor there is a Charter in Stow quoted from Clifford directed
to the Bishop Burgesses and Portreeves of London which grants to Christ and the
holy Apostle St Peter at Westminster full freedom over all the Land belonging to
that holy place.

This not being a necessary subject of disquisition in the Vestry it was therefore
observed at a Period far more Modern the Inhabitants considered themselves injured
in having a right of common extending over six hundred and eighty 8 Acres of Land
of which Tothill Fields was a part witheld—from them and in consequence applied to
the Dean and Chapter. There is extant a report of Richard Tenche Steward to the
Lord Burghley High Steward of Westminster dated 1592 in answer to a Commission
from his Lordship to inquire into the nature of several Trespasses which had been
said to have been committed by the Inhabitants of the Parishes of St Margaret and
St Martins in the Fields in what he terms the lammas Grounds that is to say
the 600 Acres beforementioned.

A diligent inquirer might from the records at present existing trace and adduce a
long concatenation of the Rights of the Abbots and Brotherhood of St Peter and
of the Parish of St Margaret but they will always observe that the right of the
latter of what nature soever it may be, grew out of the former the Right of the Parish
of St John in the same way is derived from that of St Margaret.
