Narrative

till their departure out of office, containing a period of upwards
of three years, they have never been able to prevail
upon themselves to part with it – a privation which (it
was but too evident) must have been the inevitable consequence
of their ever suffering the disposition thus cherished
to be converted into act. In the whole course
of these pages, your Lordship will not (I believe) see much
room to doubt, whether the same disposition was not
intended to be cherished – always with the same sincerity
and with the same warmth – to the very last moments
of the individual who was so highly favoured by it.

The examination (your Lordship has observed) left me
in sight of Tothill Fields: the last of four spots with
the prospect of which in the course of more than so
many years I had been permitted to amuse myself.
In this instance I had the further amusement of preparing
a Bill (at my own charge as usual) together with that of
seeing in print Notices inserted by their Lordships Sollicitor
in certain Newspapers in pursuance of their Lordships direction
which notices were declaratory of an intention on
the part of their Lordships to cause the said thousand
Bill to be brought in to the intent that if such
should be the pleasure of Parliament the same might
pass into a law. When the time came for carrying this
disposition into effect a discovery was made that it was
a sort of a business that would be attended with
trouble: which discovery was communicated to me by
Mr Long as the sole but undeniably sufficient reason for
receding from the engagement taken by such notices.
More than one Honourable Member had the goodness to
offer himself to me as ready & willing to take upon
himself this trouble. No one that was not used to business
