all this - and even at the worst, and let Lord Belgrave take
it as he pleased, any opposition from that quarter was
an event that I might depend upon would be altogether
without effect.

What could be more satisfactory. — So captivated was
I and inspirited, by these and other demonstrations of new
and unexpected confidence that I forgot — & even for some
time — what I had experienced on a similar occasion, not
many months before, from a more efficient Secretary, who,
in speaking of the Bishop of Rochester, having asserted
roundly that any opposition from that quarter would be
no impediment denied as flatly a few days after his having
ever uttered a syllable to any such effect. —

Insincerity, my Lord, is the very last supposition
I ever resort to for a clue to human conduct. At this time,
I am inclined to think, the Honourable Gentleman was
sincere. It may be, that at this time, the design of keeping
the Land unapplied to its only lawful use, was not
as yet formed any where: it may be, that though formed,
the secret of it was not as yet handed over to Mr Long. —
If it was a deceipt, it was a deceipt from which all
means of escape were wanting to me. Brushed in my
fortune, thrust out of my place in society, thrown
out of all circles, my position furnished me not with
any scales by which degrees of influence could be measured
with any hope of accuracy. In the noble Proprietor of the Estate whose will to part with it was so secret I saw (for personal qualities
had nothing to do in any such business) a Lord of
the Upper House of Parliament, a Nobleman honoured with
conspicuous marks of Royal favour — a great officer of the state.
As to the Noble Viscount, should the sense of his true
& evident personal interest prove the spring & stnadard
of his measures, cooperation, not opposition, would be the result.
