Narrative

But even in the contrary events, and though should ever
the cause of the two luminaries run in opposition instead
of conjunction, it was not for eyes like mine to calculate
the relative momenta of two such powers. — From
no observations could I have divined that the rank, the
possessions, & the... of the most Noble Marquis would
prove light in the scale when weighed against the
the prospects, & the eloquence of Lord Belgrave. —

9
It did not occur to
J.B that Ld Salisbury
might be accommodated
by the Land being purchased
& Ld Belgrave by its being
never made use of.

It had not occurred to me — I must confess — simple
as it was, the expedient had not occurred to me — that whatever
little discordancy might present itself at the first
touch between the exigencies of one Lord & the caprices
of another might be melted away & harmonized by so easy
a... as that of the purchase of the land, under
a determination never to make use of. — No my Lord
notwithstanding so many mysterious warnings as at different
times had been played off upon me in such a variety
of black & appalling shapes (of which hereafter) from the
tongue the pen and the brow of the Master Secretary —
notwithstanding all this and more it had not occurred
to me — that the death of my plan was to flow from the
very spring and fountain of its life and that the establishment
was to date its overthrow, from the purchase
of the first spot on which it could find ground to stand
upon. —

10
J.B. deceived by King -
he could have done not no otherwise
than he did had he
not been deceived

I hope therefore I shall not be sunk too low in your
Lordship's estimation by the degree of confidence which after
all my experience I must confess I at that time repozed
in Mr Long. It might not have been much to the credit
of a man's sagacity I must confess to have been outwitted
had such been the case by either Secretary: but when
facts — the very materials for judgment — are in the dark
all
