What the subjects of the Emperor of Morocco were to Mouley
Ishmack I was to Mr Long: with the difference at each
moment that the will and pleasure of the African Emperor,
whatever it might be, was communicated to the prostrate
to throng commonly with facility enough, whereas, in
my unhappy case, , to learn the
will and pleasure of the invisible and inaccessible arbiter of my fate — there
was the great, and continually recurring, & never surmounted
difficulty. —

To prevent disputes (or rather to save myself from the
possible imputation of error, in a case where if a title was
mis-stated that title would, as usual, by the only thing
noticed on the other side) to guard myself I say against
this danger, it may be as well here to mention, not that I see any difference that can result from it — whether the
date above mentioned and which if fixed within a day or
two by a Letter of mine to Mr Long which will follow
a little further on — was the date of my admittance into
his presence-chamber as above (though it be one of the
very few days that ought in gratitude to have been marked
as red letter day in my Almanack) or the date of an accidental rencontre in the Park in the course of which,viz:
in the course of somewhat less than three minutes, a
glympse of this halcyon prospect was first played before
my eyes. The Honourable Secretary in the pomp of
the fruit of royal favour, mounted on his prancer, overtook
my solitary and feeble steps: — I, as your Lordship understands already, without staying to be told pursuing my melancholy
way by the only mode of conveyance which nature
had given and Mr Long had left to me. It was he who
began the parley for it was he who could do so without
