Narrative

11. That in addition to the above expedient the delay itself,
should, after it had been spun out to a sufficient length,
be employed as a pretext to final relinquishment together
with any other together with any other more plausible pretext
though neither supported nor capable of being supported
by proof – such as the flourishing state of the New South
Wales establishment – the improvement made in the Country
Jails – and so forth.

12. That, as a means of weakening my resistance, and
compleating my ruin with the less trouble, by inveigling
me into the exchange of a good claim for a bad one, a
prospect of "compensation" in the event of the "relinquishment"
of the plan, should, at a time when my spirits
might be expected to be sufficiently broken & subdued, be
held out to me: – in which case, the realising of such
proposal being in truth impracticable – not only from the
nature of the case, but even from the want of legal powers,
the consequence would be – that, while the release thus obtained
from me would put an end to the original engagement
a pretended discovery of the impracticability would
put an end to compensation.

Whether, in so simple a catalogue of ways and means,
there was so much as a single article left unemployed,
the references, given in the margins for that purpose, may
serve to shew.

A most happy circumstance for this plan was that in
the situation which gave birth to it no accident intrinsic or
extrinsic – no want of common sense in the plan itself nor
any want of common attention or dexterity in the execution of
it could render in the thing less than compleately adequate to
its intended purpose. The death might be a violent or a
lingering one: the coup de grace given with a better or a
worse
