Narrative
of defence indeed but of defence crowned all along with certain
victory. A few words will suffice for the plan that
was left for me. My life (your Lordship sees) together with
all the prospects that had opened to it was devoted to perdition.
To sell it at the best price — to fight the good fight —
not of faith, but of despair — not to be wanting to one to
whom every body else & every thing else was wanting — such
was my only course. It was in truth that sort of game
which the facetious Chancellor describes himself as playing
with the tyrant whom he served the state the head of one
of the players; the contest, at what time and by what sort
of stroke it should be severed from the shoulders. Such it was
in respect of the catastrophe: though in its intermediate stages,
the character of it has been somewhat nearer to that sort of
Cherokee probation exercise, in which the business used to be
on one side to invent and inflict torments, and on the
other to endure them: with this difference, that in the one
case, illustration & preeminence was the prize of pertinacious
and patient sufferance: in the other case, a distinction indeed,
but of that sort which consisted in being the visible but of
a train of injuries and indignities, of which, were th in the
annals of the Treasury, no example would be to be found.

This being the plan
of operations the
proofs are now to
be brought forward.

Such being the plan on both sides I have now to lay
before your Lordship the several transactions which gave occasion
to the development of it. For the sake of perspicuity I will
beg leave in this place to bring the whole train of incidents
together at one view, distributed under different heads, as
well as the several documents & incidents comprized under
each head are made to follow one another in the order of
time with only two observations. The one consists in
bringing to view in the first place, and at a stage
somewhat earlier then that which the mere order of the documents
