documents in point of time would warrant a transaction
which will serve as a necessary clue to all the rest: the
other, in keeping together the documents relative to each
transaction, and thereby in some instances giving to a later
document belonging to an earlier transaction, the precedence
over an earlier document belonging to a transaction the commencement
of which is of a later date. The consequence is
that subsequent incidents will in some instances be brought
to view before prior ones. But from this sort of intertexture
(an inconvenience from which the most important histories
cannot be altogether free) no other perplexity or obscurity will
arise than what may be sufficiently cleared up by time and
there a note or two, together with a few reciprocal and
corresponding references —

In the course of the correspondence along with the letters
which actually passed, the chief of them between myself and
Mr Long, or rather from me to Mr Long (for the correspondence
wanted but little of being, like the sort of reciprocity we
every now & then hear of, all on one side) I may perhaps
take the liberty of trespassing so far in your Lordship's indulgence,
as to throw where & there a few letters which whether
addressed to him or other were never forwarded — and with
which, consequently, neither the Honourable Secretary, not any
body else, is chargeable; nor even myself till now. — Being
within at the time, & given in the very words in which
they were written, they will serve to fix the facts, so far
as my own testimony may be regarded as competent to
establish them. They will serve (in so far at least as their
genuineness of them in point of time as well as their
truth on other points is fortunate enough to obtain credit )
they will serve to demonstrate, as far as they go, that so
far from my having drawn upon invention for particulars, the
