E9
Breach of faith 3rd Mr Wise's Land. Mar 19 1799 June 19 1800

E.9. Mr Bentham to Mr Long. 8 March 1800.

Mar 1800
Reference to Surveyor General about Wise's Land never communicated
to J. B. Harrison had done nothing - makes idle pretences.
Understanding that no obedience has been paid, to the Harrison's neglect in
regard to valuation
of Wise's
Sent Monday 10th

reference made by your letter, of I know not what date,(a) referring
to the Surveyor General the Letters of Mr Smith,
(Mr Wise's Agent) of the 6th of August 1799 or thereabouts, on
the subject of the purchase proposed to be made of Mr Wise's
Land contiguous to Tothill Fields, I know not how to avoid
giving you the trouble of this address.

A letter received from Mr Harrison but now, speaking of
my letter of the 3d instant, that had been referred to him
by you, on the subject of the buying in the Leases, and desiring
to have the Map of the Estate in consequence, gave
occasion to an immediate visit to him on my part, with
the Map in my hand. (b)

I took the opportunity of asking him, what had been
done in regard to the valuation of Mr Wise's Estate. The result
was, that no step whatever had been taken by him
in the business. By way of reason, he made two observations:
1. That the price demanded was exorbitant: 2. That there
were no compulsive powers in the Act, for taking it at a
fair price, the compulsive powers applying to Battersea
Rise
only, and not to any other Ground. My answer was that
the exorbitancy of the price was a reason for reporting it exorbitant,
but not for making no report at all: and that, as
to the supposition with regard to the compulsive powers,
(Besides that that was a matter out of his competence) it
was a plain mistake: to which I added, or might have
added: that it did not absolutely follow, that because
(for want of good information) an exorbitant price was
demanded, a reasonable one would be refused. -
