Purchase of Ld Salisbury's on the proposal of Mr Long.

History

Of the purchase made of the estate of the Marquis
of Salisbury at Milbank Westminster
for the alledged purpose of a National Penitentiary Establishment:
and of the causes which have hitherto prevented
the application of it to that supposed intended pretended said purpose
purpose use: addressed to
The Right Honble Ld the Ld Pelham, his
Majesty's Secretary of State for the Home
Department.

Your Lordship will have the goodness I suppose your Lordship to have been before to
turn to reaching give the statement of the proceedings in relation
to the establishment as contained in my examination
dated the 23d of June 1798, and printed in this th by order of the House
of Commons in the Appendix to the 28th Report
of the Committee of Finance, intitled Police the
including most Establishments:
I suppose your Lordship to have read the
letter dated Treasury Chambers 4th May 1798
and signed Charles Long, printed in p.65
of that same Appendix, in which the "Lords Commissioners
of his Majesty's Treasury are made
to say "they have always felt a disposition to
"carry into effect the Contract" in ... "for the
erection of a Penitentiary House" ... whenever a
proper spot of Ground, for the purpose of the
said building, could be obtained": a disposition
so
