22 Jany. 1801
§.1 Purchase of Ld Salisbury's on the proposal of Mr Long

Such was the opening of the business:– for the
purpose of tracing it in its progress the more distinctly course. through the
several leading incidents, down to the present stage
of it, I will beg your Lordship's attention to
the principal features of the picture, under the
following distinctions

1. Sollicitation of Preliminary Contract for the purchase previous to definitive
conveyance.

2. Purchase of the existing Leases – preventing
while unpurchased they remained the actual possession of the lands

3. Supplemental Lands, to be had purchased from Mr
Wise.

4. Number to be built for – thence – terms of
construction, as well as together with terms of maintenance.

If there could have been any doubt of its importance
in the first instance, that doubt would have been pretty
well removed by the event: As the unavoidable
businesses (whatever they were) went on, the meetings
unavoidably necessary to the carrying it on, of course
took place: but as to my business – (which may
be always all along be be distinguished by the characteristic name
of the optional business) I was never able to flatter
myself with the idea, that by any labour of mine,
strenuous and unremitting as it was, any addition was
ever made to the number of those meetings. If I may anticipate for a moment for anticipation
a little may be allowed me I (for the words it will cost me not money)

the day on which the business was compleated (so far as it
has hitherto been compleated) was within a day or two of
eleven months after posterior to the day on which it was thus opened to
me. Such as the fruit of the miracle wrought in
my favour, as above:– were where whereabouts should I have been,
without the miracle?
