§.1 Purchase of Ld Salisbury's on the proposal of Mr Long
It had not occurred to me – no, my Lord, no I must
I must confess submitt tending its simplicity confess – simple as it was,
it the expedient had not occurred to me – that whatever
little continuity discordancy might present itself, at the
first touch between the exigencies of one Lord
and the caprices of another, might be melted
away and harmonized by so simple easy of a temperament,
as that of the purchase of the land,
under a determination an assurance that
under a determination never to make use of it.
– No my Lord – notwithstanding so many
mysterious warnings, as at different times had been played off
upon me, in so many such a variety of
black and appalling shapes, (of which hereafter) from the tongue,
the pen, and the brow of the Master Secretary
– notwithstanding all this and more
it had not yet occurred to me – ⊞ ⊞ that the death of my plan was to flow from the very spring and fountain of its life, and that the
establishment was to date its overthrow from the
purchase of the first spot in which it should
could find ground to stand upon.
