not be consider, till without taking the best measures most effectual measures
in my power for ascertaining the matter of fact
on the ground of which they those observations are made. It
would be a sad thing, if a paper which is
in fact alone bears a highly respectable official
signature, should for want of pursuing the truth
in consequence of the apparent want of it that mark of authentication and pledge of responsibility be
treated with that freedom which is commonly
enough – used with anonymous publications, and
which on that supposition which if the paper in question should prove in fact to belong to that class, might not be
altogether without ground.
It is an These Such are the considerations, for which have
presented suggested to in the prayer of this my humble
address application which I take the liberty of submitting to
you in the following terms of the paper marked A and hereunto annexed – humbly beseeching
that if any impropriety should be remarked
in it the person may be in any it or in any part of it such impropriety may be imputed not to any
improper designs intentions or wishes on my part but
only to my ignorance.
1. That directions may be given to the proper
officer to examine the original of the paper in
question, and to report and certify to me for
my information, whether any the signature of
any person or persons and if of any, of what
person or persons is or are now extant upon the face
of it.
