Question 3. Compensation.

At that time it had been said to me we will give you this
or we will give you such or such a sum naming a profit
to any amount, on condition of your giving up your claim to
have the contract in question carried into execution, and
joining in the necessary measures viz. by Petition or signature to a Private Bill or whatever it
might be. Neither at that time nor at any subsequent point of time would I I would not have accepted any such offer.
They would have been. I have undertaken what I understand
to be the cause of the Prisoners and the Public, and nothing
that man can do for me shall can engage voluntarily to give it
up.

No such assertion had ever been made to me as that it was
by my opinion of the inexpediency of the plan that the backwardness
of in the execution of it had been produced. On the contrary
from various quarters and on various occasions very positive
assurance information had been given on and from the as good authority as
any that this backwardness and whatever disposition that
might have then been formed towards the ultimate relinquishment
had been produced by causes of a very different nature.

My own conviction of the beneficialness of the plan as well
including the practicability of it
intended remained unshaken. No reasons
whatsoever had ever been given me for believing that in the minds
of those in whose power it was to give execution to it it had was
been even viewed in a different light. Had there been any
such reason to b found, what always and capable of being
assigned, those persons it always all along seemed to be were by way
of humour, as well as humanity bound to have assigned it: to have assigned it
to me, and heard what if any thing I could find to
say in answer to it.
