I shall still be able to bear such less, and I am content
to bear it. If I make no profit upon the males, or if
the profit made upon the males falls short of covering the
loss upon the females, then, and then only it is that I
call for any addition at all; nor in that case do I call
for any greater addition than what shall shall be sufficient to
make it me whole.

But the exigency respecting the females is I understand
a very pressing. — If so, I am solicitous to do
whatever may be in my power towards meeting this exigency
with the utmost promptitude

alive to the danger of insurrection and forcible escape on the
