IV Objection 4th. Inordinate expence of conveying
the Convicts from the place of conviction to the
place of punishment.
Answer. Supposing the convicts to be conveyed
from the several Offsize and Quarter Session
towns of the Metropolis, the expence (it must be
acknowledged) could not but be greater than it
would be, upon the supposition of a plurality of
the situation of which should be exclusively
Panopticons, placed in the highest possible
Panopticons, of which, The number being determined by the largeness
degree consistent with the open made upon
of the scale, the situation should be exclusively
the large scale, adapted to this on purpose: say
one for each allotted to each of three points of the compass — East
North & West.. But—

1. Suppose, that in addition to the one London Panopticon,
only two such Country receptacles were
required, Place these two in any two of the three
above mentioned points of the compass to the exclusion
of the third,— in the East and North only —(or in the West

and North only)—(or in the East and West only,) it seems
questionable whether any such saving as supposed,
—even to any the minutest amount, would really
take place.

2. Even supposing each of those three points of the
compass to have the Panopticon, and thence, in respect of length of journey, and magnitude of travelling expences, a corresponding
saving produced, whether the advantages
produced on this score would, on calculation be found
(I am inclined to think) so small, as to go but a very little way towards
counteracting the disadvantages already indicated as
having place, onon the more important score abovementioned.
