To Dundas

Sir, I hope, and humbly conceive, I have now
given you reasons enough if you will be pleased
to use them: and it is with this view that
I propose printing the Memorial, that their
Lordships may order it to be distributed if
such should be the pleasure, may order it to be given copies to be given to the gentlemen
concerned
in the event of their Lordships
deeming it fit to accede to grant so much of the prayer of the
Memorial as
respecting the land, ay, if such
should be their pleasure, order it copies to be given
to the gentlemen concerned: or that in the other event,
I may be able to justify myself have possess the means of justifying myself
upon occasion in
the eyes of the public
and of my friends

for the part course I shall
have found myself
reduced to take
for a part step that
may call forth attract
enquiry attention
against the any imputation
of levity
or ill humour
or imprudence in the eyes of the
public and my
friends.

I wish, Sir, that these the reasons, among
which if any thing inconsistent with the respect
which is so justly due to you should have crept in
it is the result not of intention on my part but
of pure awkwardness, and honest ignorance, may
be felt to be pressing ones. If I knew how to
make them more so, more pressing than they are
be assured Sir, I would not spare you. If you
have ever so faint a wish to give a finish to the
work you have begun, you will not wish to be so be sorry to be
spared feel yourself so pressed: you will be pleased with me, you will in
your own mind thank me for thus pressing you not sparing you:
to find them so much
stronger than you seem
to have been aware.
