be fruitless, I should not think myself justified,
in concurring with the proposition, of his putting
himself to any such trouble: and that, if it was
the decision of Administration to refuse the old spot,
I thought I could not be too early in begging leave
to drop the business altogether: adding, what was
most true, that my resolution to that effect was
not the result of the whim or ill humour of the
moment, but of a long-continued and most deliberate
reflection, grounded on reasons which
I was ready to submitt to him at large. It
was that he gave it as his opinion, from
which I saw no reason to withhold my acquiesence,
that you, Sir, serve the person to whom
any such determination as well as the
reasons on which it was grounded, would with
most propriety be submitted in the first instance.
It is for this purpose that I take the liberty
of troubling you, Sir, with the following Memorial,
which I had been preparing for the Lords
of the Treasury, which had the business of the
Land principally for its object, and which was
nearly finished, when information was given
me of a disposition, which I had flustered myself
would have rendered any such address unnecessary.
