in any single instance: that to save himself from such a mortification
no endeavours would be wanting on his part: & that it is
not by a slight degree of expence that such his endeavours would be
stopped. Imputing no blame to any of the gentlemen in his heart,
he never has with his lips or with his pen. Sympathising with
them in his heard, he would grudge nothing that could serve to
testify the sincerity of his sympathy.

After such an explanation he hopes it may be permitted him
to remark, were it only for the singularity of the occurrence, that the
gentlemen in whose instance that dissatisfaction he display'd itself in
the strongest colours are comparatively at a distance: gentlemen close
to the spot have conceived no such disgusts & apprehensions. Your
Memorialist has had the distances measured between the nearest
part of the spot in question and the Villas of the only two gentlemen
who have happened to be mentioned to him as standing in
the front of the business: the result is, that the one distance is pretty
exactly a mile, and the other about four-score yards more. From
the particular spot intended for the Buildings, which in effect only
and not in appearance would be a prison, the distance would not be
so little by at least 1/4 of a mile more. So much for unpleasant
views. No part of the land is, as far as he can learn, seen from
either of those Houses. Persons going from London to the proposed
site of the Penitentiary establishment, will not have to pass nearer
than the distance abovementioned to either of those Houses. Persons
going from London to either of those Houses can not without going
out of their way set foot on any of the four Roads by which
the spot in question is surrounded. So much for bad company.

Your Memorialist has moreover a receipt for keeping off bad
company: which is to admitt no man who will not enter his name
and abode in a book, and stand further examination if required:
