1 Mr Bentham's Memorial

Memorial of Jeremy Bentham Esquire
Humbly Sheweth,
That, for the purpose of setting on foot
the Establishment intended to be carried on by Your Memorialist,
by Contract with Your Lordships under an Act of the 34th year of his
Majesty's Reign (Ch. 84) intituled "An Act for erecting a Petitentiary
House or Houses for confining and employing Convicts and the Act
of the 12th July 1799 Ch 104. (being the General Appropriation Act)
it is become necessary to him, to sollicit the notification of Your Lordships
pleasure, relative to divers points hereinafter mentioned, upon the Grounds
immediately following, that is to say —

That Your Memorialist, by Deed of Appointment, executed by

10th October 1799 -- (b)
Memorialist appointed Feoffee,
for purchasing Ground
for the Penitentiary House -

Your Lordships, in virtue of the said Statute of the 34th Year of His
Majesty's Reign, and dated the 10th day of October last 1799, was appointed
Feoffee, for the purpose of treating for, purchasing, and holding, all and
singular the Lands Tenements and Heriditaments then belonging to
James Marquis of Salisbury, at or near Milbank Westminster, containing
by estimation fifty three Acres two Roods and fourteen Perches
of thereabouts in the Gross; the same being, by the said Deed of
Appointment, declared to be "in part" of the Ground intended to be
"purchased," for the purpose of the said first mentioned Act; "together
by
the Deed
"with such other pieces or parcels of Grounds, as Your Lordships should
"find necessary, and should approve, as fit and proper to be purchased"
for the said purpose of the said Act. —
