Evidence
On that occasion, whether any mention was made of
the Panopticon plan is more than I can recollect
the affirmation is what presents itself as the most natural
case. What I do recollect is that of the Gloucester
Penitentiary was a subject in which no considerable part
of the was bestowed: On one topic of prison management what it
was I do not remember the worthy Baronet was expoliating with peculiar correctness what I remember of it
as neither more nor less than this, tan of the point article of management
so much insisted upon in question if really and consistently pursued
the consequence would be that the prisoners would be masters
over the Jailer, instead of the Jailers being master over
the Prisoner. Visibly enough The impression made by the observations
upon the whole company, and it may be imagined whether
the worthy Baronet formed an exception was too manifest
to be improvized. From the worthy Baronet no reply
and said nor did the conversation evidence any longer upon
this ground.
Who the rest were I do not remember: except
that my Brother (General Bentham) was one. Surer
were we out of the door than – You did wrong, said he.
You were too pointed in your observations the rest of the company
I saw red in their countenances felt as much,
and as for Sir George you may henceforward count
upon him as an adversary.
