To Ld Sidmouth
My Lord, Queens Square Place Westmr Sept. 1812
Five tracts, begging the honour of your Lordship's acceptance,
(all but the first, and the third in some sort the third as yet unpublished) accompany
this address: dates when printed, 1778, 1791, 1797, 1802
and 1803.
To To give commencement to that part of the history which concerns
the Panopticon Contract, they are or come short of accompanied by copies
of two letters sent to the late Mr Pitt: dates 21 23
Jany 1791, and 10 Febt 1792.
In these I was in hopes to have added copy of a
short Note, received Ao 1778, on the occasion of the tract of
that date, from the late Judge Sir W. Blackstone: a token, by
which it would appear, that, no less than four and thirty
years ago, in the opinion of that Judge, to which, were it
not for the length of the commencement I could might
have taken the liberty of adding that of his then collaborator Ld Auckland,
my humble and unbidden labours in this vineyard vineyard were not altogether
without fruit: – in this vineyard, from which, after a
most considered acceptance, followed by acceptance followed by no fewer
than twenty years filled up with occupied by an alternation of disappointment
and lingering expectation, I have now, and without
so much as the slightest suspicion of blame or unfitness in any shape, –
to be I have now, My Lord been driven out, and, unless restored
by your Lordships justice, without redemption, with my
name posted up in the title of an Act of Parliament, in
the joint character of a public burthen and a recorded outcast.
