10 Sept. 1812
To Ld Sidmouth
No, my Lord: real responsibility, effectually limited
power anywhere in any hands this was one thing odious: this
was the thing not to be endured: secret management
irresponsible power in gentlemen's own hands, this
was the one thing done: this for all, together with the job
for some, I was the thing (for which no public succession was
too great) for which public money by so many hundreds of thousands
at a time was to be wasted, and public faith violated: all pretence of regard
for any engagement that could be violated will
thrown away.
And therefore it is that the blameless of it unprotected
individual is to be turned out by a strong arm, by an by the
arm of irresistible power Act of Parliament made on purpose and therefore it
is that a detachment from the ministry was to be
was to have been (must I my Lord say is to be?)
put in his place.
