Some five or six and fifty years ago, I remember
contemplating with no small wonder on one of the graphical points
which were at that time to be found in place of
popular resort, or some such large number of persons who must have been of the family of Mr
Justice Mather or Mr Justice Slender, buttoned up together
in the waistcoat of a great man of that time, Mr
Bright of Maldon. Whether this vision sense, besides being
typical had or had not anything in it of prophecy, so
it was that not long ago, if not a dream a
reverie presented to my imagination the reverend
and learned persons, "the twelve Judges of England" Phillips p. 70 who
in the imagination of Mr Recorder are exhibited in this note of his as
occupying so large a space, all of them sitting very composedly
together, buttoned up either buttoned up in his
waistcoat or bound up together in his robe.

Now then if in the of this state of declared war
between his Majesty in and the rest of the Parliament on the one part, and
the twelve Judges, headed by Mr Recorder of London on
the other part, his Majesty should be content to abdicate
his throne in favour of this learned and determinate chieftain,
and the good people of the the United Kingdom equally
content to transfer accordingly their allegiance, then and no such
case I also who am one of as being among the least of them, can do no
otherwise than swim with the universal tide.
