On the other hand, should it be the pleasure determination of his
Majesty or Parliament to maintain such his Majesty's
authority and of those my bellow subjects or any
part of them to call upon him so to do – a call
in which I can not help being of opinion that their
honour as well as their best other interests is concerned –
and in consequence if such determination should
any such thing as a civil war, which in my
language would be a rebellion be the consequence, my
allegiance having been sworn to his Majesty that saw
it, and never either to Mr Sylvester, or to Lord
Ellenborough, or to Sir James Mansfield
or any of "those fellows" my part in the contest would
not be mine to take. The usurper Cromwell thought himself bold, when
in the in a comparatively early part of his career the peril
of eventual regicide coming on the carpet, he declared
that should the King happen to come in his way, he
would feel no more reluctance in firing his pistol in
his face than in the face of John or Thomas. For my
own part not having any of the Cromwell blood in me, if
I imagine as above the death of the King and so committ what the the lawyers have declared to be treason
as to be sure I do, I imagine it for no other purpose
than the using my trouble endeavours to prevent it, and therefore
humbly hope for pardon: but with respect to those rival
and at present triumphant Kings imagination of that sort being as
yet from imaginary a short six pounder that to have pierced the
typical waistcoat and disposed of such number of them as
it happened to find in its way, or what would be still more
effectual, a chain shot to have taken them all thirteen in a
row, I imagine can
not help imagining
that by such round
shot or such chain
shot any good service
would be done.
