A LETTER from Thomas Hardwick, Esq. to the Supervisors
appointed under the Act 52 Geo. III. c. 44 dated the 26th of
June instant; — with, An Abstract of ESTIMATE of the Expense of
building a PENITENTIARY House.
Berner's — Street, 26th June 1812.
GENTLEMEN,
IN pursuance of your orders to make an Estimate for the Penitentiary House,
according to the Design you did me the honour to put into my hands, I have surveyed
the ground upon which it is intended to be built, and find the nature of the substain
such as to require Planking, which has been estimated, upon the best information that
could be procured, at L. 5,000. and some additional brickwork will consequently be
required ; but viewing the scite, accompanied with all its contigencies, I am of opinion,
that its proximity to the River, and the advantages which are thus afforded both to the
Contractors while conducting the work, and to the Establishment when it is compleated,
will fully counterbalance any additional expenditure that may arise from the circum-—
stances above stated. Under these considerations I have made an Estimate of the
probable cost of the said Building, as nearly as the shortness of the time, he present
fluctuating state of the prices of materials, and the difficulty of procuring a full
investigation of the necessary depths and nature of the soil, would admit of ; the
amount of which Estimate is L. 259,725. ;- as will more fully appear from the
annexed Abstract
I have the honour to be,
Gentlemen,
Your obliged and obedient Servant,
The Hardeick.
To
The Supervisors of the
Penitentiary House.
