Penitenty House for the Males at Battersea Rise the Penitenty House for Females
who by their Opinions on the 29th. of June 1781. thought proper to reject the
spot in Wandsworth Field & to approve the spot at Battersea rise as proper for the
erectg. Penitenty. Houses for both Males & Females — The s.d Committee found that
the spot so approved of was about 4 miles from Westm.r Bridge & was situated at a
distance from any Town — That it consisted of Acres of ground & reached to
the River Thames — That the part of the s.d spot intended for the scite of the Build.gs
was a rising Ground which declined gradually towards the River & was separated —
therefrom by a plain through w—ch it wo.d be easy & accordg. to the plans it was
proposed to cut a narrow Canal from the River to the foot of the hill so as to
be received within the Boundary Wall of the s.d Penitenty Houses to the advantages of
which both in point of convenience, cleanliness & health by the abundant supply
of Water & by the flow & reflux of the Tide were manifest. And the s.d Comm—ce
furr found that And whereas in p—suance of the s.d & Act the Supervisors entered into a Treaty with
the Proprietors of the s.d Grounds & made an offer of a Sum of Money for the prchase
thereof w—ch being refused a Special Jury of the Coy. of Surry was summoned &
impanelled accordg. to the dire—con of the s.d & Act who on the 10.th day of Sept:r 1782being
