That how reasonable soever it might
be, and had been thought, to compel
Persons to part with, or suffer Inconveniences
in, their Property, for
such National Purposes — as OPENING
ROADS, BUILDING BRIDGES, MAKING
RIVERS NAVIGABLE, &c. — That
no Instance could be shewn — where
the Legislature had granted such a
Latitude of Power to any Set of Persons
whatsoever, in Favour of Purposes
so little significant, as those set
forth in the Bill appeared, even in
the most advantageous Light they
could be placed in; — No sufficient
Reason could be offered, nor ever
can be, to justify the Restraints laid
on so many hundred Families to quit
their Houses and their Bread, merely
that a few Gentlemen might get better
Interest for their Money*; and That,

* It cannot be supposed, that it was the Intention
of the Legislature to dispossess Individuals of
