XXV §.3d III Experience II Ireland
1 §.3. Fruits, a Golden age
§.3. Fruit of Democratic ascendency. the a Golden age. of Ireland.
Such being the effect of the for five years together
the effect of the Volunteer system — of the will of the people
manifesting itself in the principle of universal suffrage,
in a word of democratic ascendency, substituted to a
Monarchic mixture of Monarchical and aristocratic
ascendency under a foreign Monarch, and calling
itself Protestant ascendency, because it was Br by Protestant
hands that the tyranny was exercised — Such
being the nature of the peaceful influence exercised by
the body of the people in the conduct of its government
what was the result? were the results?
1 Subversion of the rights of property? No such thing.
2 Subversion of the Constitution? No such thing. In the
Constitution of the Kingdom of Ireland a change of was
indeed effected. But bef even at that time on the occasion
on which it was effected — numerous as were the
authorities, governing bodies without the concurrence of which the change
neither was nor could have been effected, was ample
in objection in every one it was applauded in every one was the applause bestowed upon it
Scarily scarcely in any man was an objection made
to it — nor has so much as the shadow of an objection
been raised against it since. That one flagrantly bad
point removed, all the other points, good and bad together
3. S continued as before.
