Radicalism not dangerous

XXXII §.2 §.5 III Experience
II Ireland

1 (o) Prospects spoilt

(o). §. Termination Extention of democratic ascendency and reform — restoration
of Monarchic— Aristocratical ascendency and misrule

Having preceded continued thus far long, democratical ascendency
how came it to its end? having preceded thus far,
reform how came it to stop? Answer. Democratical
ascendency
was brought to its an end by the such of the
people's choice
the leaders choi whom the people, in their
character of associated Volunteers, had chosen; and, in
particular, by those of them who were in Parliament:
democratical ascendency being stopped, the
monarchic-aristocratical ascendency was restored, and
reform was [thereby] stopped of course. These leaders
how why came it that they thus deserted and betrayed
the cause of those by whom they had been chosen?
Answer. Because they had gained every thing point that
in their eyes was for the advantage of their aggregate interest
namely the Aristocratical interest, and that if they
had proceeded with the people any further, every step the next step
they took would have been to the disadvantage of that
interest: the only interest served by it would have
been for the advantage of not other interest of theirs
than that which they had in common with the people.
Now and this broad interest was in their eyes of less value
that their own peculiar broad one: as for the interest of
the rest of the community in so far as distinct from
their own it was not, it never had been, it never
could have been, of any value in their eyes. [+] In the eyes of his and
their own extraordinary
constituted individual
perhaps. Yes. But
Taking
them in a body, it is contrary to inconsistent with the nature of man
that it ever should have been so.
