Causes of the Union
In Ireland as elsewhere
primary object of all
powerholders is maintenance
and encrease of power.

On this occasion in Ireland, as on very occasion every
where else, the great object with those who shared in the power,
and sweets of government to maintain, and with the most all possible
encrease as possible, their power: maintenance of comfort
among the people, [if at all, but] a secondary one a secondary
one, or rather but a third rate one: the object next at
heart to the maintenance of the power itself by means of which
the money was extracted, being the extraction of the money
of the subject many for the benefit of to be shared among the ruling few being
in so far as it was distinct from the power, the object which
in the seat of estimated importance stood next to it occupying
the middle place between that and the comfort and tranquillity
of the people.

as above, look to measures
for its permanent
diminution.

Among the effects Of every thing that is commonly presented to view by
any such words as disorder or disturbance are the lessening
or threatening to lessen the quantity of money capable of being
extracted as above, and the calling upon the members of government
for an extra proportion of attention and mental
labour: by the first mentioned of these effects the interest of
the purse was disagreeably effected, by the other the interest of
the pillow. Even while employed in giving support to them
it accordingly became an object with the government to apply keep applied
some check and limitation to the discontents/disturbances some relief to to the sufferings it was producing. Though
it had force enough at command to set insurrection at defiance
it had force enough at command and was never
averse to using it, a different and less atrocious policy
was employed at the same time resorted to, presented itself as eligible and was adopted.
Thus the universally extending mischiefs: add damage to estate of this and that ruler.
