The general predominance P Proof of self-regarding over-all
social affections is a matter of fact which will scarcely be
desired by any person, who, without observation of every application
that may be capable of being made of it to political discussion,
will allow himself seriously and steadily to consider examine
it.
If it be true, it is on several and principal accounts of the highest
importance that it should t as extensively as possible
be understood to be so.
1. Beneficial effect the first. — excluding misplaced confidence The proposition as this is understood
it will have the effect of preventing the subject
many from entertaining as towards the ruling few any such the expectation
is that of th a general disposition to make sacrifice

or any other more extensive interest
2. Principal effect the second — excluding those disappointments
and regrets which in proportion to the extent
of the confidence reposed and violated are among the
sure consequences of the violation of it.
