Only by impossibility were the endeavours of Lord
Charlemont and all Mr Grattan's friends to defeat the design prevented
from taking effect. This is what we must believe if we give
any credit to the assurances contained in this letter of his Lordship
to his Belfast Agent Dr Halliday. But in a letter to Lord p 232
Rockingham then Minister dated June 1782 day not mentioned
"I am extremely obliged to your Lordship for your kind alacrity
"in carrying into execution the vote of the House of Commons on
"behalf of my friend Mr Gratton. Now if Lord Rockingham
had not been that obliging the design which it was so impossible
to defeat would have been defeated. For both these letters we
are indebted to the candour or the simplicity of Mr Hardys.
In the letter to Dr Halliday I know with certainty that Grattan
though he felt himself flattered by the intention looked upon the Act
with the deepest concern. After that comes the a continuation of
the intimidation namely an intimation that "to
those who construe all this into hypocrisy, or the excellence of and
preeminence of virtue, and the character of Grattan, are as invisible
and incomprehensible, as the brightness of the sun to a

all this fine sentimentalism was it without an object? Not it indeed. The
Seat proprietor and the Seat occupier had been seen through at
Belfast by the most de men of discernment among the Volunteers.
They were recognized as being true to the few and to themselves false
to the people to whom they pretended to be true. To counteract
the improper produced by those deserving was it are that all
these horrora out from the pen of the Noble Seat owner b in
Dublin to his friend and Agent at Belfast at the spot at
which the Volunteers also had made so unfortunate a choice of
him for their Commander and Leader were assembled.
