Hardy. p.269. Ao 1783 Nov.r 29. "Whoever was present in
"the House of Commons on the night of Novr 1783 can not easily
"forget what passed there. p.270. "If ever a popular assembly
"wore the appearance of a wild and tumultuous ocean, it
"was on this occasion; at certain, and those very short, intervals,
these were something like a calm, when the dignity
of Parliament" (such a Parliament!) the necessity of supporting
the Constitution " (such a Constitution!) and danger of any
"military assembly" (of any of those military assemblies
composed of the people themselves and by which so much
unexampled, so much pure, and considerably acknowledged good
had been produced!) "was, with equal truth, depicted on
"the other side was feelingly and justly expatiated on.
The sad state of the representation, whether Volunteers existed
or not was, with equal truth, depicted on the other side."
. . . . " The question was put and carried, of course, in favour
"of Government, their numbers 159, those of the Opposition,
77.

Hardy p. 278 "The reader who may not remember the days of this military
Convention will be naturally anxious to enquire what sensation its adjournment or rather its downfall
excited. .

Hardy p.276. Ao 1783 November December day not of the Month of
the month not mentioned — a few days after the above. "This Convention"
(says Mr Hardy now in his own person) "was, independent
"of its military origin, which alone was sufficient
"to condemn it,
the least justifiable of any Convention that
"was sat in Ireland." Which alone was sufficient to
condemn it! the circumstance without which it was impossible
that it should have had existence is that any
thing by means of which so much pure good in his
own estimation so much pure good should have been done
was sufficient to condemn it. Its very existence was sufficient
to condemn that institution from by which no evil in no shape and in so vast
in in so many shapes
good and in so vast
a quantity, had been
produced."
