Radicalism not dangerous

III Experience
II Ireland

(3) (2)

I do not say Mr Pitt recommended it, therefore this course, therefore
it is a right one. Mr Earl Grey recommended it, therefore it is a right one.
This I do not say. But this I do say — that if there is consistency in
either, such recommendations will save the proposal from all reproach, at the hands of both parties —
This is as a not only of
Whigs only but of Tories.

or 12 or 5

I say If it depended upon me? But alas!
it depends up If it depended, did I say? Alas! as every body sees but too
plainly, it depends not now upon any body. There
are too few given
The disease is too far gone to admitt
of any gentle remedy. There can not now be any such
bloodless, tranquil, completely innoxious change.
Never, while man is man, not never by any government
will any considerable willing sacrifice to of power
be made. Not to those rulers were the people of Ireland
indebted for the relief which thing] these obtained. [of the
oppression under which they governed.] Not to the government,
but to the enemy and themselves. It was
from to the Bourbons they received that boon which they
never would have received from the Guelphs. [+] [+] Never more will it
return — that happy
conjunctive combination concourse
of circumstances
under which Ireland
obtained that first
relief from oppression relaxation
which has since been
followed by a so strange a
mixture of [others] relaxation
and [other]
oppression in other
shapes.
From
external enemies there is now the people have now no hope. P Against internal
enemies there is now they have now no recourse. Guelphs, Bourbons,
all the other European Monarchies, with or without concert
are now in a confederacy against all that is good in
government against the people whom they hold in chains.
Whatever security the people ever had there has ever been against oppression
and depredation from above — against misrule in any
shape, is now gone. Every thing At home or abroad
every thing that operation can in any way as a check upon present
and pressing despotism has its use. The Stuarts — So
long as they were Pretenders — even the Stuarts had their use. So long as
the Guelphs were foreigners, and a descendent of the Stuart
Kings was at hand, the Whigs with their Guelphs were kept in
check, and Tories moved for Bills for giving annuality to Elections (a) (a) Note in another page
The Guelphs became natives, and the silly people Stuart drank
himself into contempt; [+] [+]Drafted out by the well
paid hand of Blackstone,
one God upon earth
served now
one living image of the Almighty served
for the idolaters of both sects: and despotism with a varnish of
piety is Found to be the only security for liberty.
