Radicalism not dangerous

Notes
III Experience
II Ireland

(3) Charlemont's treachery
Conclusion

(i) [the legislature of their country] The legislature of their country!
Oh yes, but what legislature? Let Lord Sheffield — avowed constant
partisan of the Government power in whatever hand — avowed scorner continued
not to say hater of the subject many here informs us — that legislature
by which [p. 362] "Ireland … had been infinitely more
"oppressed than America" infinitely more oppressed and
by what means? by means of that destruction of political
power — of that state of the popular representation, which
Lord Sheffield was so horrified at the apprehension of seeing
changed and which Lord Charlemont while professing a
zeal to see it changed, was taking those measures by
which he prevented it from being changed.

Not that from any man in his the situation of
either of them any thing better could without mental weakness reasonably have been
expected. But such is not the less the nature of the case
expected. By perseverance on the part of the Volunteers — by
their perseverance in the substitution of a gover form of
government subservient conducive to the interest of the subject many to
a form of government hostile incurably hostile to their interest,
they could not either of them have bettered their own
condition, they could not either of them have failed to
render it less eligible. Nothing better obtained than a security
in which the "mob" would have been shared, and for that despicable
Security the delight of sharing in the and profit security a share in the power of exercising oppression and depredation
upon at the expense that same mob was would have been to be parted
with.
