Grattan's Speech
No open suf suffrage no riot: no riot, because no provocation
to riot: an effect does not happen without a cause.
This is the one reason that the enemies of the people, the adherents
of their oppressors have such an antipathy to secrecy
of suffrage. Not as by By Freedom of suffrage combined with
practical equality of suffrage equality in effect and value as between
one mans right of suffrage and anothers, they would
be dethroned. Therefore their object is to rep persuade men render man persuaded
to believe that riot is an inseparable concomitant to
freedom of suffrage: to any Election but those the sham
Election of a pocket or bribery-brought Borough in whi
both which cases a riot is excluded by
corruption and imposters. Admitt that Agree with him
that then the wherever there is free Election there will
be riot, and that therefore to prevent exclude riot all
freedom ought to be excluded, he has no objection to pronounce
one of eloquence or riot upon those terms.
