5 Grattans Speech

13
In former times
viz. Ao 1783 discovery
made of a speech of
an antiradical Grattan's.
See Hardy's life of
Charlemont

But my wish is not to take advantage of
a causal loose observation in a weak place in the argument of
an adversary but to take the arguments against me
in their full strength — in the natural degree of strength
not only that has ever been given to them, but if I could
not discuss it that the consistency and nature of the case was could
possibly be given to them.

With these wishes it was matter of no small
satisfaction to me to become informed as for the first time
I was a few weeks ago of a speech made against radical
reform — against radical reform in Ireland by
[that most illustrious of Irish Orators] Mr Grattan.
I transcribe it out of Mr Hardy's Life of his and
Mr Grattans illustrious friend the E late Earl of Charlemont.
Further on there will be occasion to admit to the time
and vexation in which it was spoken. Let us now
consider it in itself.
