to support it, but what come in at the other
entrance. By this means a draught of air all through
the dungeon might at any time be maintained.

Whether in hot countries the heat might at after
all be so excessive as to endanger the life of the offender
remains to be enquired. If this should be the case
either this mode of punishment must be abandoned
or else some expedient for refrigeration, such as an
Ice house must be employ'd. These particulars are
so far from being of light importance that upon the
attention that is paid to them depends the preservation or destruction
of the life of the offender. To inflict capital
punishment under the name pretence notion of a short of inflicting imprisonment only
that for a short time never can be the practise of a considerate legislator.
To regard it as a matter of indifference which of
those effects take place is one of the last most highest con flagrant manifestations
of unfeeling tyranny.

Where a man is to suffer ignominious
punishment, the Judge if he thinks proper may
indulge him with the liberty of wearing a mask
during the time of execution.

The use of this is to spare the offender
a part of that humiliation which he would might
must feel if upon mixing again with society he should
fall in the way of persons who could be certain
