it will be enough to know that there is a
man person suffering such or such a punishment for
such or such an offence, it is not material to
them who that person is. This circumstance too
while it adds to diminishes the real misery of the punishment
(which is what there is bad in it) will
serve to heighten the apparent terror of it (which
the is the beneficial in it part of it) by the idea
idea of of mystery and which it is calculated to impress.
The ignominious punishment for Theft shall
be as follows.
1. The One hand of the offender shall be smeared
with birdlime which is as much as to say to the end that men may mock scoff make at him & say: See here
