Punishments

Cap of ignominy

lower to receive the head. Each side is to
be a an oblong square 3 foot high and 1 1/2 foot broad.

On each side is to be printed in letters as
large as may be a short history of the offence:
on which shall be expressed 1 the name of
the party offender 2. the name of the offence. 3. the
time when and 4. the place where it was
committed. 5. the party if known to whose prejudice it
was committed, together with any other circumstances
if there be room for them which may
serve to particularize the offence.

Execution
Black Scaffolding

Executions which are performed in the most
publick manner shall be performed on
a scaffolding created for this purpose. This
scaffolding shall every where be painted or
hung with black.

Ministers of Justice
to be clothed
in black

The Sheriff with his attendants and
guards shall all be clothed in black.
The Surgeons or Surgeons, and the Executioners
with full-bottomed wigs on their head, and white wands in their hands.
The Sheriff and Surgeon and Chaplain in long robes: the Executioner
and Surgeon’s mates in jackets.

The Executioner’s and Surgeon’s mates shall
wear masks: to encrease the terror of the scene
and to screen them in some measure those useful instruments of justice from
the antipathy of the unthinking people populace.

Dirge and Prayer.

To p. Before the execution commences shall be
performed a solemn and melancholy dirge: after that
done the Chaplain shall pronounce a prayer: and that the prayer over
a sky rocket shall be discharged: and then shall commence
the execution.
