Artificial precipice
The artificial precipice shall be there made. An iron rod
shall be prepared about the thickness of mans wrist
it shall be fasten'd horizontally between two perpendicular
beams. This machine being placed on a stone
pavement, the rod shall be raised at least twice as high
above the pavement as the criminal is tall. He shall
then be blindfolded and seated on the rod; his hands being confined in
such manner that they cannot touch either the rod or
anything else whereby he may support himself: and in
that manner he shall be left for a time to be limited in
his sentence or until he falls upon the pavement. But
expedients may be employed to save his head from the violence
of the fall.
This punishment is to be employ'd in the
clandestine robbery and
cares of clandestine threats of bodily harm.
He now trembles who made his neighbour tremble
