Rationale of Reward.
§.2. Pensions of Retreat

1. As to consistency, the assigned cause is upon
the face of it utterly incapable of producing the
reported numerical effect. At the time in question,
no man's salary (says the story) would pay for his boots and shoes:
half the amount is added to it; and now it is enough
for every thing. Absence of exact truth is therefore
matter of absolute certainty; an of any approach to
truth, there is no evidence.

2. As to probability, Men in general (says the story) have no desire
to profit themselves at one another's expences
such is the position on the truth of which the claim to
credence rests. For a ground for belief in a story
with such a moral to it,—men who are in Government
pay, or who look to be so, are not in their situation
apt to be oversevere in their scrutiny into
evidence.

For argument sake, admit the exact truth of it.
Supposing such the result the first year, it ould not
follow that it would be the same the second: still
less the third, and so on. For a short time, good humour
and gratitude, with or without the application of additional
checks, might, often so comparatively ample
an addition, have been productive of the effect, without
a miracle. But these social sentiments are
transient ones: such regard is a perpetual one: if after
the application of the reported nostrum the
disease thirst after gold—was for any length of time
prevented from resuming its former acerbity, it
must have been from causes of which nothing is here
said.
