It is no new observation how prone men are to
censure – how much proven to censure than to approve.
But it is a very fatal mistake to impute the whole
of or any great part of that principle to natural malignity.
Mankind Human nature is selfish indeed and attached to their own interests, as they must be, and as they ought
to be: but they are not mali without provocation malicious.
If it were through mere malice that was the cause, there would be
a merit in despising it – Solace would be a virtue.
the good opinion of the bulk of the people would be neither
valuable nor attainable. Reason would be thrown away
upon them – They would only be to be answered with a rod.
That proneness to censure is much more naturally
accounted for from ennui and from pride. Ennui
the (real) source of (most) many a mischievous
action, pride the common source of (evil qualities
as well as good ones) most of he good as well as evil
qualities in human nature.
21.
It is the men who are most exposed to ennui, the
idle and the speculative that give law to the opinions
of the active and laborious. From ennui When harrassed
men apply the ensure by oppression all men if indeed turn their thoughts to the
that conduct of men in power as to the obvious cause
of it. But man men when harassed In such unhappy
times all men are politicians. But at all times
men of exposed to prone under the influence of ennui are disposed to turn their
speculation where they can with safety to the conduct of those in power, as being
the most interesting object of they can find for it.
It is from ennui they speculate: it is from pride
that they condemn.
